The week before students return to school is a great time for educating and training staff about the newest and most popular methods. Teachers are already back on campus, refreshed, and ready to prepare for the year, so an opportunity to gain new teaching tools will be welcomed! Title II grants are a great source of funding for this. Activities designed to improve any core subject area, including reading fluency, can be covered under this grant.

Playbooks, Inc. is now offering several options for staff development workshop packages designed to improve teaching methods for building reading fluency using Reader's Theater. Each Workshop option provides instruction on how to implement a Reader's Theater program in your school successfully and efficiently. Discover the power of Reader's Theater to build reading fluency and confidence in students in this fun, entertaining, and interactive workshop.

Workshop is usually between 90-120 minutes and training topics include: why Reader's Theater is an approved method of Repeated Guided Oral Reading and integrated instruction, how to structure a weekly Reader's Theater program with proper repetition and rotation of stories over varied lengths of time; coaching techniques for reading with expression; how to assign different leveled roles properly and structure effective groups; how to measure student progress; and many more. Reader's Theater Exercise 20:
Camp Reader’s Theater™ Story With
Lesson on Classroom Behavior

Teaching Summer School or another educational summer program? This month's exercise includes a mini version of a Playbook® story from one of our Camp Reader’s Theater™ Kits, The Coopersville Capers. The story is about a classroom full of mischievous third graders who are determined to pull the best prank.

Eventually, the children come to realize that compromise and cooperation are much better ways of getting along, so the story provides a great opportunity to discuss appropriate behavior in a school or social setting while also building reading fluency. The Reader’s Theater script is also an effective tool for channeling rambunctious or “trouble-maker” students’ energy into a productive activity.

The activity also includes cut-out Mini-Costumes for each character in the story, and worksheets prompting students to first make a list of classroom rules, and then describe better alternatives to given examples of bad behavior. With this activity, students can have fun performing a character part and improve their reading skills, while you nurture a cooperative classroom!

Surprise! Uh-Oh! Oh, No!
(Lessons in Character Series)

An Original PlaybooStory

Content for Grades K - 2
Reading Stages 1 - 3

Written by: Linda Schwartz
Illustrated by: Bev Armstrong

Synopsis: Mr. Fritz is a teacher who has a birthday coming up! His students want to give him a surprise party, but it seems like a lot of work for a class of young frogs to plan and put together a party. They soon learn, however, that by working together and pooling their ideas, the workload for each one becomes much less and the fun factor becomes much greater. Not only is it possible to carry out the plan, it’s quite enjoyable! But when Mr. Fritz breaks his arm, will all their well-laid plans go to waste? Not to worry! These young frogs have become so good at thinking as a team and organizing themselves that they soon come up with a great idea to save the day. The last chapter of this story is written all in rhyme!
