All About Reader's Theater Exercise 15:
The benefits of Reader's Theater are not limited to improving reading fluency and comprehension; Reader's Theater stories are also an engaging tool for teaching character development and academic content. Just as the exciting activity of Reader's Theater keeps students interested in reading so they can improve their skills, it keeps their attention on the story content and effectively teaches imperative social lessons. With Valentine's Day around the corner, what better way to encourage students to care about and help their peers than with Reader's Theater? Last month, our Reader's Theater exercise helped students develop 'multiple literacies,' improving their visual and literary comprehension skills. This month, our free Reader's Theater activity teaches important Character Education themes in the powerful format of multi-leveled and colorized Reader's Theater. The activity also allows students to practice their own creativity and verbal skills by writing their own Reader's Theater scenes on a given Character Education topic. Topics included are bullying, responsibility, cooperation, helping, and friendship. To get this month's free Reader's |
Black History Month: A Time Black history month is celebrated in February to recognize the cultural and social contributions of earlier generations of African Americans to our country, and the significant effect their history has had on all other aspects of American life and literature. Classroom lessons in conjunction with the holiday often include studying oral story telling and music practiced by slaves as they struggled to remain hopeful, or reviewing current issues that still affect African Americans today. Two Playbook® stories that fit perfectly into a Black History Month unit are Master Man and The Great Rhyme Travel Machine Presents: African American Heroes. Master Man, for Grades 2-6, is an African folk tale that teaches a lesson of humbleness. Tales that teach lessons were common both in native African literature and in African American culture. African American Heroes, for Grades 3-6, introduces students to influential black leaders in American History, George Washington Carver and Shirley Chisholm, and shows young people they can accomplish whatever they are interested in, no matter their skin color or gender!
