All About Reader's Theater Exercise 15:
Double up the Benefits of
Reader's Theater With
Character Education Themes

The benefits of Reader's Theater are not limited to improving reading fluency and comprehension; Reader's Theater stories are also an engaging tool for teaching character development and academic content. Just as the exciting activity of Reader's Theater keeps students interested in reading so they can improve their skills, it keeps their attention on the story content and effectively teaches imperative social lessons. With Valentine's Day around the corner, what better way to encourage students to care about and help their peers than with Reader's Theater?

Last month, our Reader's Theater exercise helped students develop 'multiple literacies,' improving their visual and literary comprehension skills. This month, our free Reader's Theater activity teaches important Character Education themes in the powerful format of multi-leveled and colorized Reader's Theater. The activity also allows students to practice their own creativity and verbal skills by writing their own Reader's Theater scenes on a given Character Education topic. Topics included are bullying, responsibility, cooperation, helping, and friendship.

Black History Month: A Time
For Remembering the Past and
Focusing on Progress

Black history month is celebrated in February to recognize the cultural and social contributions of earlier generations of African Americans to our country, and the significant effect their history has had on all other aspects of American life and literature. Classroom lessons in conjunction with the holiday often include studying oral story telling and music practiced by slaves as they struggled to remain hopeful, or reviewing current issues that still affect African Americans today.

Two Playbook® stories that fit perfectly into a Black History Month unit are Master Man and The Great Rhyme Travel Machine Presents: African American Heroes. Master Man, for Grades 2-6, is an African folk tale that teaches a lesson of humbleness. Tales that teach lessons were common both in native African literature and in African American culture. African American Heroes, for Grades 3-6, introduces students to influential black leaders in American History, George Washington Carver and Shirley Chisholm, and shows young people they can accomplish whatever they are interested in, no matter their skin color or gender!

In African American Heroes, current-day student Kelly meets Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm as a 12-year-old through
the magic of the Great Rhyme Travel Machine!

The Original and Best Format Available!

The Playbooks® format has become so popular that many publishers want to copy it! But don't be fooled by their lesser imitations. Because of our patent, they cannot copy the most important features of our unique Reader's Theater books and sets.

Playbooks® include easier and more difficult roles within the same story which help students avoid stumbling in front of their peers, allowing them to read aloud with confidence and accuracy.

Playbooks® multi-leveled character roles are edited by credentialed teachers using a proprietary leveled word dictionary and strict sentence structure guidelines, so students achieve ultimate success and fluency among their peers. We do not simply assess what an author has written to determine what level the text might be; we actually edit and level the roles!

Playbooks® carefully balance main character roles and role combinations so that all readers participate throughout the entire story, even the struggling readers! The whole idea is to build reading confidence, fluency, and participation for all readers and not just give smaller more insignificant roles to lower level readers.

Only Playbooks® can present actual dialogue text in different colors. This is a patented format and this simple difference is important and can be crucial to ultimate student success. Color-coded text means each reader’s dialogue text (not just the name in the margin) appear in a different color, making it easier for students to follow their character roles, assess how much they will read, and be prepared for their next turn to speak. This also helps to create a sense of ownership and security in their role which leads to increased reading confidence and involvement. Color does not identify the level of the role, however, so that students do not feel pigeonholed at a certain ability level.

Colorized Dialogue Text
is important!
According to a Loyola University study
, word recognition and reading comprehension improves 27% when text is presented in color compared to bold text, and 35% when presented in color compared to contrasting fonts.

Only Playbooks® include optional mini-costume kits that allow students to fully become their characters, and fun Reader's Theater games that allow them to really ham it up!

Only Playbooks® include Cross-Curricular activity student workbooks that reinforce story concepts.
